What is Human-in-the-Loop?
A system design pattern where humans review, approve, correct, or override AI outputs at critical decision points. Rather than full automation or full manual control, HITL finds the productive middle ground: AI handles the heavy lifting, humans handle the judgment calls.

The right level of human involvement depends on the stakes. Low-stakes, high-volume tasks (email drafts, data labeling) can run with minimal oversight. High-stakes decisions (medical diagnoses, legal advice, financial trades) need human checkpoints. The art is designing the handoff: giving humans enough context to make fast, informed decisions without drowning them in every intermediate step. As AI systems mature and trust is established, the human role shifts from approving every output to setting boundaries and handling exceptions.
