Open Innovation

What is Open Innovation?

A model coined by Henry Chesbrough arguing that organizations should use both internal and external ideas, and internal and external paths to market, to advance their products and technology. The boundary between a firm and its environment is permeable rather than protective.

My perspective

In practice

Manifests as hackathons with external developers, partnerships with startups, outward IP licensing, or systematic scanning of academic research. In consulting, it means designing innovation programs that connect client organizations to ecosystems they would otherwise never see.
